TikTok Ads Manager can show dozens of columns of data. Most advertisers look at two: spend and return. That is enough to know whether a campaign is working, but not enough to know why, or what to change. Understanding the metrics in between is what turns reporting into decisions.
This guide explains the TikTok ads metrics that matter, how they are calculated, and how they connect into a chain you can use to diagnose any campaign.

Delivery Metrics
Impressions
The number of times your ad was shown. One person can generate several impressions.
Reach
The number of unique people who saw your ad at least once.
Frequency
Frequency = impressions / reach. The average number of times each person saw the ad. Rising frequency is an early warning of creative fatigue.
CPM
CPM = spend / impressions x 1,000. The cost of a thousand impressions. CPM reflects competition for your audience and how well your ad engages. Strong creative tends to lower CPM because TikTok rewards ads people respond to.
Attention Metrics
These video metrics tell you whether people are actually watching.
Two-second and six-second views
The number of views lasting at least two or six seconds. Divide by impressions to get a hook rate: the share of people who stopped scrolling.
Hook rate = 2-second views / impressions x 100.
Average watch time per video view
How long, on average, people watched. Compare it with the length of the video.
Video completion rates
The share of views reaching 25, 50, 75 and 100 percent. A sharp fall early suggests a weak start. A gradual decline is normal. A sudden drop at a specific point shows where viewers lose interest.
Engagement
Likes, comments, shares, follows and profile visits. Engagement signals relevance and builds social proof, especially on Spark Ads.
Click Metrics
Clicks
Clicks on the ad's destination link or call-to-action button. TikTok may report clicks on all elements and destination clicks separately. Use destination clicks for performance analysis.
CTR
CTR = clicks / impressions x 100. The share of impressions that produced a click. CTR shows whether the ad prompts action.
CPC
CPC = spend / clicks. The cost of each click. CPC is the product of CPM and CTR: a high CPM can be offset by a high CTR.
Conversion Metrics
Conversions
The number of tracked actions, such as purchases or leads, attributed to the ad within your attribution window. Our guide to attribution explains windows and click vs view attribution.
Conversion rate
Conversion rate = conversions / clicks x 100. The share of clickers who converted. This reflects both the ad and what happens after the click: the landing page, price, offer and checkout.
CPA
CPA = spend / conversions. The cost per acquisition, purchase or lead. The most important efficiency metric for most performance campaigns.
ROAS
ROAS = attributed revenue / spend. Return on ad spend. A ROAS of 3 means three units of revenue for each unit of spend. Compare it with your break-even ROAS, which depends on margin.
Value per conversion
Average revenue per conversion, useful when order values vary.
Business Metrics Beyond the Platform
Platform metrics are not the whole picture. Also track:
- Blended or marketing efficiency ratio: total revenue divided by total ad spend across channels.
- New customer acquisition cost: what you pay for genuinely new customers.
- Customer lifetime value: what customers are worth over time, which tells you what CPA you can afford.
- Lead quality: for lead campaigns, the share of leads that become sales.
The Diagnostic Chain
Every conversion campaign can be broken into a chain:
CPA = CPM / (1,000 x CTR x conversion rate)
In words, your cost per acquisition depends on what you pay for impressions, how many people click and how many clickers convert. When CPA is too high, find the weak link:
| Symptom | Likely cause | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| High CPM | Weak engagement, narrow audience, competitive season | Hook rate, audience size, calendar |
| Low hook rate | Weak opening seconds | New hooks |
| Good hook rate, low watch time | Body loses interest | Pacing, structure |
| Good watch time, low CTR | Weak or missing call to action, unclear offer | CTA, ad text, offer |
| Good CTR, low conversion rate | Landing page, price, mismatch between ad and page | Website, offer, tracking |
This chain stops you fixing the wrong thing, such as rewriting ads when the real problem is a slow checkout.
Benchmarks: Use Your Own
Industry benchmarks for TikTok CTR or CPM are widely published, but they vary enormously by category, market, season and objective. Your own account's history is a far better benchmark. Track the median of each metric across your ads, and judge new ads against that median.
Setting Up Useful Columns
Create a custom column set in Ads Manager for daily use, for example: spend, impressions, CPM, 2-second view rate, average watch time, CTR (destination), CPC, conversions, conversion rate, CPA, ROAS and frequency. Save a second set for awareness campaigns, focused on reach, frequency, CPM and video completion.
Reading Metrics Over Time
Single days are noisy. Use rolling seven-day views for decisions, and compare the same days of the week. Watch trends rather than snapshots. Our optimisation routine sets out which metrics to check daily, weekly and monthly.
A Worked Example: Diagnosing a Campaign
A home fitness brand saw its cost per purchase rise from 30 to 45 dollars over two weeks. Using the diagnostic chain, the team compared the two periods:
- CPM had risen slightly, from 8 to 9 dollars.
- Hook rate and watch time were unchanged.
- CTR was unchanged at around 1.2 percent.
- Conversion rate had fallen from about 2.2 percent to 1.6 percent.
The problem was clearly after the click, not in the ads. Investigation showed that a free shipping offer had quietly ended on the website the week performance dropped. Restoring a shipping offer brought conversion rate and cost per purchase back close to previous levels. Without the chain, the team might have spent weeks producing new creative to fix a problem the creative did not cause.
Metrics for Awareness Campaigns
Awareness campaigns need a different set of metrics. The core ones are reach, frequency, CPM, cost per thousand people reached, video completion rate and average watch time. Engagement and follower growth add colour. Where possible, add brand lift measures such as ad recall and awareness. Judging awareness campaigns on conversion metrics will always make them look bad, because that is not their job.
Reporting Metrics to Stakeholders
Leadership rarely needs every metric. A useful monthly report shows spend, results, cost per result and return against target, plus two or three diagnostic metrics that explain changes, such as CTR and conversion rate. Add a short narrative explaining what changed and what you will do next.
Engagement Metrics and What They Tell You
Likes, comments, shares, saves and follows are not the goal of most campaigns, but they are useful signals. A high share rate suggests content people find genuinely valuable or entertaining. Saves suggest intent to come back, often to buy later. Comments reveal questions and objections you can answer in future ads. Follows from ads indicate that people want more from your brand. Read comments on your top ads regularly, because they often contain the best creative ideas for your next round of ads.
Building a Simple Dashboard
A simple weekly dashboard keeps metrics useful rather than overwhelming. Include spend, results, cost per result and return for the account and each campaign, alongside hook rate, CTR and conversion rate for the top ads. Add one line for business data from your own systems, such as total orders or qualified leads. Compare each figure with the previous week and the monthly target, and highlight only what changed meaningfully.
Common Metric Mistakes
- Celebrating cheap views or clicks without checking conversions.
- Judging awareness campaigns on CPA.
- Comparing CTRs across different objectives.
- Treating platform ROAS as the full truth without checking real sales.
- Reacting to one day's data.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good CTR for TikTok ads?
It depends on your category, objective and audience. Rather than chasing a published benchmark, compare ads against your own account's median and focus on whether clicks lead to conversions at an acceptable cost.
Why is my TikTok CPM so high?
Common causes are weak engagement with the creative, narrow audiences, competitive seasons such as Q4 and markets with high demand. Improving hook rate and broadening targeting often lower CPM.
What is hook rate on TikTok?
Hook rate is the share of impressions that turned into views of at least two seconds, or sometimes six seconds. It shows how well the opening stops people scrolling.
How do I calculate break-even ROAS?
Divide 1 by your profit margin before ad spend. For example, with a 40 percent margin, break-even ROAS is 1 / 0.4 = 2.5. Below that, each sale loses money on the first order.
Why do TikTok's numbers differ from my store's sales data?
Differences in attribution windows, view-through attribution, time zones, refunds and tracking gaps all cause mismatches. Use platform data for optimisation and reconcile with your own sales data for business decisions.
Which TikTok metrics should I check every day?
Spend, delivery, conversions and cost per result are enough for daily checks. Review creative, audience and diagnostic metrics such as hook rate and CTR weekly using seven-day trends.
Is view-through attribution reliable on TikTok?
It indicates that people saw an ad before converting, but it can overstate impact because some would have bought anyway. Treat it as directional and use lift tests for firmer answers.
